MIRI: The Miri Fishermen’s Association has reminded fishermen going out to sea to take several safety measures to avoid untoward events.

Chairman Councillor Jamali Basri said the current Landas season is not favourable for fishing out at sea.

However, he said if they need to do so, fishermen should ensure they go out in groups.

“Go out fishing in numbers and bring along the GPS (global positioning system) or handphone and safety gear so that in any emergency, you can be reached by the authorities in time,” Jamali told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the unpredictable weather pattern is risky and dangerous, particularly for fishermen with small boats.

Jamali reminded fishermen to check the weather forecast every day before heading out to sea.

He said if possible, fishermen should use this time to repair their nets and boats until the weather is calmer.

The association has some 1,000 registered members.
