Drug addict among nine held in Ops Cantas

KOTA KINABALU: A drug addict was among nine people arrested by police at a budget hotel and entertainment outlets in the state capital during the ongoing Ops Cantas.

The police arrested the 30-year-old drug addict in a rented room of a budget hotel at Kampong Air around 1am yesterday.

“Police also found several packets containing white substance believed to be syabu on the suspect,” said city police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun, and added that the operation began from 10pm of Friday until 1am yesterday.

Meanwhile, Jauteh said the operation was divided into two phases with the first phase focusing on budget hotels and the second phase on several entertainment outlets.

“In the first phase at several budget hotels in Kampung Air, police have checked 62 people, including 19 women, and out of the total, two people have been detained for drug abuse.

“In the second phase, the police have inspected 135 people at several entertainment outlets and eight of them have been taken to the city police headquarters after they tested positive for drug abuse during preliminary urine test,” he said.

He said all those detained would be remanded for investigation under Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

Jauteh said the main purpose of Ops Cantas was to target those whom police believed were involved in criminal activities such as thieves, drug addicts, Mat Rempit and gangsters.

He added that the operation would be carried out from time to time to fight crime activities in the State Capital.
