Man held in syabu raid on Penampang house

KOTA KINABALU: Some 932.82 grams of crystalline substance, believed to be syabu worth around RM220,000 was seized by the police during a raid on a house in Penampang.

A 44-year-old man was also detained in the raid, carried out by officers from the narcotics division of Penampang police headquarters around 3pm on October 11.

Sabah Police Commissioner Dato’Wira Hj Hamza Taib said the police found a plastic bag containing a crystalline substance believed to be syabu, weighing 428.58 grams. Also found were 10 plastic packets filled with the crystalline substance, believed to be syabu, weighing a total of 504.24 grams.

“The drugs seized weighed some 932.82 grams with an estimated market price of RM220,000,”Hamza said in a press conference after the monthly assembly at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters  here yesterday.

He added that that suspect was being remanded for seven days from October 12 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence for drug trafficking upon conviction.

As the suspect had also tested positive for syabu, he would also face a maximum jail term of two years and a RM 5,000 fine if convicted under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The Sabah Narcotics Crime Investigation Division has opened 9,162 cases and arrested 9,639 offenders for various offences since January this year under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This is an increase of 37.8 per cent compared to 9,017 cases and 9,457 arrests made in 2012.
