MIRI: A total of 28 non-governmental organisations from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak donated RM5,000 to the widower of accident victim Julan Batang yesterday.

Miri Member of Parliament Dr Michael Teo presented the donation to Upet Usan, whose wife was killed while crossing the Pujut-Lutong road last week.

The couple had planned to go to the National Registration Department (JPN) to collect Upet’s MyKad when the tragic accident occurred.

Dr Teo said the government should work harder to reach out to members of the Orang Ulu community who had yet to apply for identification cards (ICs).

He said many are reluctant to travel here to apply for their MyKads because of the cost.

Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Baram information chief Dennis Along claimed over 10,000 Orang Ulus, particularly in Baram and Belaga, did not have MyKads.

“One thing we must understand is that with an IC, it enables the people to enjoy many benefits of being a Malaysian citizen,” he said.
