SIBU: The government has been urged to support sea fishing both as a sport and commercial undertaking by giving consistent grants.

Sibu Fishing Club (SFC) chairman Wong King Uieng said sea fishing as a sport is a good hobby.

“We also hope that the fishing activities should be consistent with international laws of the sea.

“Protection of sea-bed will ensure fishermen will always have fish to catch,” he said in his address at the club’s 10th anniversary celebration dinner held at a leading hotel here Sunday.

Wong said fishing is a noble activity, allowing anglers understand the link between man and nature, cultivate people’s love for nature.

“Fishing is like playing golf, you need good gear, good boat equipment and a good captain to lead us to a good place to catch a lot of fish,” he said.

Fishing, he added, would strengthen one’s perseverance, make one patient and physically fit. “You need to develop arm and wrist strength in order to be a good angler,” he explained.

Wong said his club held offshore and deep-sea fishing every year, and sent members for fishing tournaments.

Club’s honorary advisor Lau Kiu Seng who spoke as the guest-of-honour at the dinner said the club served as a good platform for members to foster friendship and consolidate unity.

Lau, who is himself an enthusiastic angler, expounded the goodness of fishing as a hobby.

Some 400 fishing enthusiasts, including those from Sarikei, Bintulu and Miri, attended the dinner which was made merrier with a lucky draw that carried prizes comprising fishing rods, spinning reels, lines and hocks sponsored by five local fishing tackles dealers.
