KAPIT: The Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) will set up a security checkpoint in Bakun within the next few months.

Controller William Jinep disclosed that there will also be an office with full-time staff at the Bakun Hydroelectric Project (HEP).

He said this during a riverine safety course on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as search and rescue (SAR) training in Bakun recently.

It was organised by SRB, Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd and Warga Machineries and Transport (WMT).

William commended WMT for working to improve safety in Bakun and added that SRB would give its full support in terms of manpower and technical know-how.

Meanwhile, SHSB engineer Zulkifle Osman said the programme was beneficial for all parties.

“This would lessen the burden as the owner and operator of Bakun Dam and to make sure the dam and the intake area are fully protected. I’d like to remind all users of Bakun Reservoir to register their vessels and personnel with SRB, SHSB and WMT no matter how big or small as this process is mandatory in line with the Safety and Security Mitigation Measure (S&SMM) now actively ongoing.

“Any vessel not registered accordingly would be deemed as not respecting the effort by relevant government agencies or parties in ensuring the safety of all reservoir users especially within the vicinity of the dam. With the S&SMM plan being implemented, government authorities would also be able to detect any unwarranted operations within Bakun Reservoir,” he explained.
