KUALA LUMPUR: The maiden Malaysian Youth Parliament (PBM) sitting is expected to be held in April next year, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that the selection of members would be carried out in Feb 2014.

He said his ministry had increased the total registered voters comprising youths aged between 18 and 30 years, from 17,155 people in May 2013 to 70,181 currently.

“The number of youth voters has increased 310 per cent since registration began in May,” he said.

He was replying to a question by Datuk Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Narrashid (BN-Kota Tinggi.

Noor Ehsannuddin had wanted to know the status on the PBM.

PBM is giving opportunities to 80 per cent of youths who are not members of youth associations to represent the grassroots in raising their views on national youth development.

The selection of PBM members is based on the distribution of the youth population according to states and 119 members of PBM aged between 18 to 30 years will be selected online through its website http://www.parlimenbelia.gov.my.

In the PBM, nine committees will be formed covering socio-economy, international and diplomatic relations, education and career, culture, sports, patriotism and integration, community development and health, technology and innovation as well as human capital to discuss the various issues according to the areas.

“Our objective is to produce youth leaders who are open to ideas through debating various issues and proposals set which would be tabled in Parliament for consideration,” Khairy said. — Bernama
