KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) launched its second recycling centre project on Monday at SJK Hock Lam.

KDC deputy walikota Jefferson Jamit Unyat, who officially handed over the bins for the school’s 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) programme, said the project aimed to inculcate a love for the environment.

“The culture of recycling reusable refuse must be nurtured at a young age. Children must be taught to make it a habit to recycle items such as aluminium cans, plastic bottles, paper and glass. Recycling must be promoted to all strata of society to keep our environment clean and to reduce waste,” he said.

“Recycling of usable items is closely related to our lives. In order to achieve results, it needs the involvement of the community. This is to do with the environment and health. Less waste of reusable items would save costs and create a healthier environment to reduce disease.”

He called on the school’s pupils to disseminate the message of recycling to their parents, siblings and friends.

“Now that we have handed over the recycling centre bins to the school, it is the school’s responsibility to look after the centre. Whatever proceeds from the sale of the waste and recyclable products goes to the school to assist in carrying out its other environmental programmes and activities,” he added.

In conjunction with the launching, over 100 Primary 6 pupils from the school also attended a talk on recycling.

KDC assistant environmental health officer Favian Masing Lintang spoke on the benefits of recycling and the importance of practising the 3R concept.

The council’s first recycling centre project was launched at SK Kampung Baru last month.
