KUCHING: More than 200 youths handed in their membership applications to join the Putera and Puteri wings of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) last weekend.

SPDP Puteri chief Councillor Barbara Mawan yesterday said more young people joining the party showed it was doing many things right.

SPDP Tasik Biru Puteri wing chief Agnes Jonep handed over the applications to Barbara during a dinner at Kampung Skiat in Bau. Also present was Putera chief Tony Chen.

The dinner was a reachout cum engagement programme for youths. It is part of the two wings’ social calender of events.

“The dinner witnessed a celebration of the party’s richness in diversity in being a truly multi-racial party. A host of colourful programmes reflecting the beautiful spirit of togetherness among youths was presented throughout the evening,” said Barbara.

Among the highlights were performances by local youths.

Barbara reminded youths of their roles and responsibilities in steering Malaysia in the coming years.

“The country has so much unique diversity that if we are able to deal with all the grouses and discontent of the people, we would be a world class country,” she said.

Barbara said Malaysian youths today are bolder and more outspoken in expressing ideas and ideals.

She encouraged them to capitalise on this boldness.

“They should harness their positive energy with rational minds when presenting insurmountable arguments in their efforts to improve their lives.”

She advised youths that in driving such agenda they should do it peacefully and as a united front.

They should focus on issues that matter and not overindulge in petty things, she added.

“This is because without preserving the peace the nation is enjoying now, it will be like water without source or trees without roots,” she reminded.
