Man killed as car crashes into iron gate

PENAMPANG: A local man succumbed to his injuries after the Proton Iswara car he and two others were travelling in rammed into an iron gate at Jalan Tulangis, near Kampung Terawi here early yesterday morning.

Cliff Calley Chan, 33, from Beverly Hills, Bundusan died at the scene of the accident after sustaining serious head and body injuries in the 3am incident.

It was said that Cliff, who was behind the wheels of the Iswara car, had lost control of the vehicle while going downhill and as a result rammed into the iron gate of a house.

The car then flipped over and landed upside down, pinning the victim and his passengers inside.

Cliff was pronounced dead at the scene while his two yet unnamed passengers, aged 23 and 34, were immediately rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment where their condition was reported to be stable.

Meanwhile, Penampang district police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh, said based on police investigation, it was believed that the vehicle was heading to Putatan from Beverly Hills when the incident happened.

He said the victim succumbed to serious injuries and died at the scene while two other passengers were still being treated at the hospital.

Singh has urged eyewitness of the incident to come forward to assist police in their investigation under Section 4 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
