RM1.2 bln for 68 water supply projects nationwide — Ongkili

PUTRAJAYA: The government has allocated RM1.2 billion on 68 water supply projects nationwide, including 18 new ones, under the 2014 Budget.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the government was taking serious action about water supply as the water reserves in some states were less than 10 per cent.

“The 60 on-going projects and 18 new ones include the building of dams, building or upgrading of water treatment plants,
carrying out of programmes to reduce non-revenue water and the installation of new pipelines,” he said at the ministry’s Industry Awards presentation, here, Thursday night.

Ongkili said the federal government was also continuing the agenda of expanding clean water supply coverage in rural and remote areas through the Rural Water Supply Programme managed by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

“Under the 2014 Budget, RM457 million has also been allocated to provide clean water supply to 8,000 households,” he said. — Bernama
