Drug mules remanded another seven days

SIBU: Two foreigners, a man and a woman, suspected to be drug mules, were ordered by a Magistrates’ Court here yesterday to be further remanded for seven days to facilitate police investigation.

The 56-year-old man and 30-something woman are believed to have in their possession 7.4kg of syabu worth about RM1.48 when they were arrested at Sibu Airport on Nov 27.

The seizure was also said to be the biggest seizure of such substance by the police in the state this year.

According to earlier news reports, the duo was on the same flight from KLIA.

Police seized from the man 3.1kg of drugs believed to be syabu with a street value of RM625,000. Seized from the woman were 4.2kg of drugs also believed to be syabu with a street value of RM850,000.

The drugs were concealed in their luggage, handbags, slippers, and inside ribbons. The suspects are believed to have flown in from Chennai and New Delhi en route to Kuala Lumpur.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
