SIBU: Flood preparations in Selangau have gone full throttle, including enlisting community leaders and longhouse chiefs to be on the look-out for any eventuality in their areas.
Tamin assemblyman Datuk Joseph Mauh disclosed yesterday they had set up a focus group headed by the district office.
“Community leaders and longhouse chiefs have been informed to prepare the folk for evacuation to higher ground if water level rises rapidly and inundate their homes,” Mauh told The Borneo Post.
He was asked on flood preparations in Selangau following the persistent inclement weather. The evacuation centres earmarked are SJK Tong Ah, Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (SADIA) multipurpose hall, Saint Charles’ Church for Selangau areas while for Balingian and Arip areas are SMK Ulu Balingian and SK Bukit Arip respectively, and a community hall for Sekuau. Another evacuation centre is in Stapang. Mauh, however, said despite the continuous rain, the situation in Selangau was under control.
“We are monitoring the situation closely to prepare for any eventuality,” he assured.
