KUCHING: Six bands will compete in the finale of War of the Rhythm (WOTR) open genre battle of the bands competition to be held at Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) this Saturday.

The inaugural event is jointly organised by SCV, UiTM Samarahan campus and Kuching Waterfront management.

The champion will walk away with the grand prize of RM5,000 cash while the first runner-up will get RM3,000 and second runner-up, RM2,000.

The finalists are O’skool Acoustic, Short Cute, The Rising, Kolej Komuniti Stars, Up To Us and Surya Ritma.

SCV’s senior manager for sales and marketing, Zaini Zainuddin called on the public to attend the final where the bands will be displaying their best performances. Judging will be conducted by local celebrities.

“Response towards the competition had been encouraging. We are organising it to provide an avenue for the young people to showcase their hidden talents,” he said while expressing satisfaction on the performances of the bands.

According to him, the lucrative prizes offered to winners is so far the highest in the local music scene because the other competitions are offering only RM1,500 for the champion.

Twelve bands entered the preliminary round held last month and eight qualified for the semi-final round held at Godown Auditorium of Kuching Waterfront on Nov 30. It was attended by both local and foreign live band enthusiasts.

The event is jointly supported by Ministry of Tourism, Sarawak, Department of Culture and Tourism Malaysia, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and is jointly sponsored by Nescafe, Coca Cola, Les Paul Studio and AV Events.
