SAFETY FIRST: Mun secures a crash helmet for a motorcyclist during the campaign.

MIRI: Statistics show that most of the accidents in the city occurred on straight state roads, Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong said yesterday.

“Based on our record, state roads recorded the highest number of fatality in accident cases followed by municipal roads and federal roads. In terms of road structure, most accident occurred on straight roads, followed by T- and Y- junctions and bends,” said Lee.

“Don’t speed and be careful when driving on straight roads where accident frequencies are quite high. Reduce the speed along bends and make it a point to stop when come to T- and Y-junctions,” he added.

Cars are still the highest in number involved in crashes, followed by four-wheel-drive vehicles, he said.

Disclosing this after a Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with Christmas here yesterday, Mun said the police are in the midst of a 15-days ‘Ops Selamat’ – crime prevention operation. The operation began on Dec 18 and will last till Jan 1.

“This time is a little different from the others. In addition to the regular crime prevention such as burglary and so on, this year we also monitor the express boat operations ferrying passengers from Kuala Baram to Marudi,” said ACP Mun.

This is the first time Miri Police are mounting the operation under marine police. The marine police will be monitoring the operation of express boats.

“We will ensure there will not be overloading of passengers. We want to ensure that the Kapit incident will not happen again,” he added.

The police chief also reminded those returning to hometowns for the celebration and long school holidays to seek assistance from police to ‘look after’ their house during their long absence.

“They can fill a form and submit it to the nearest police station to their home. Say they live in Senadin and on their way back to Bintulu and they forget to report   their absence from home to the nearest (police) station which is Lutong, they can report (that) to Batu Niah station and Batu Niah will later e-mail the form to Lutong,” he cited.
