SIBU: Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has expressed confidence that the reappointment of Vincent Lau Lee Ming as a Temenggong is welcomed by the 200,000-strong Chinese community here.

He said the people might have rejected Lau in the last general election but the community as a whole welcomed his reinstatement as their paramount leader.

Describing the reappointment as a deserving case, Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister, said Lau had been working so hard even after he had lost in the election.

“He continued to work hard as you know.

“He is a man who can dedicate himself to the service of the community and you can see that all along he has been serving with dedication, commitment and even total involvement.

“So, he deserves it. The chief minister and the state government think that he should be reinstated,” he told reporters after witnessing the presentation of appointment letters to community leaders and village chiefs for Sibu and Sarikei divisions yesterday.

Lau, 65, who is deputy managing director of KTS, relinguished the Temenggong post in April this year to qualify his contest in the May 5 general election on a BN’s ticket.
