KUCHING: The New Year started with clear skies which turned dark, causing rain to fall around 4pm yesterday.

Earlier, the flood waters had subsided in most places here.

The nearly 24-hour spell of clear weather since Tuesday evening made this possible.

However, the incessant late afternoon rain caused some parts of Tabuan Dayak and Desa Ilmu to be flooded as of 7pm yesterday, with some main roads turned into ponds.

Other places hit by floods in the state capital included Jalan Durian Burung, Jalan Ketitir off Jalan Batu Kawa and Jalan Tong Wei Tah.

As of 4.24pm yesterday, the National Security Council Sarawak in its official Disaster Portal reported a total of 262 flood victims in various areas namely Bintulu, Marudi, Miri, Sarikei and Samarahan.

Floods in the past few days forced the evacuation of 60 families who remain in six evacuation centres throughout the state.

There were no reports on loss of lives.

According to a weather forecast by the Meteorological Department, today is expected to be wet in most areas of Kuching, Betong, Bintulu and Miri divisions while a thunderstorm may hit Samarahan division.
