MIRI: The body of an Indonesian man in his 30s – who went missing during an outing at Bungai Beach, Bekenu, on New Year’s day – was found yesterday.

Hendrik Ibrahim, who worked at a construction site in Sepupok, Niah, was found some 5km from where he was last seen before a strong current pulled him under. Local fishermen spotted his shirtless body floating in the sea around 7am.

They immediately brought the body to shore and then called the police for assistance.

When contacted, Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong confirmed receiving a report of the discovery.

“The case is being investigated as sudden death,” he said.

Hendrik’s body was later sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem.

Some injuries, believed to have been caused by debris, were seen on his head.

Hendrik had gone to the beach on Wednesday morning with 10 friends for a New Year’s outing.

According to his friends, he was swimming around 12pm when tragedy struck.

“They saw him waving helplessly for help three times before he went missing into the sea,” said one of his colleagues who only wished to be identified as Mardina.

She was among the deceased’s friends who rushed to the beach after receiving news that his body had been found.
