KUALA LUMPUR: Koperasi Perkhidmatan Pelajaran Nasional Bhd (Kopenas) targets all its 14,000 members to register for its just-launched Debit-i Bank Rakyat-Kopenas card this year.

Kopenas chairman Mansor Abdul Rahman said to achieve the target, the cooperative would also provide an easy financing plan for members who do not have the capital to deposit in the debit card.

“The use of the debit card would reduce the need to carry a lot of cash and the frequencies to withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs).

“The easy loan plan is in the form of personal loan, whereby each member who applies will be allocated between RM5,000 and RM10,000 to be placed in the debit card,” he told reporters after the launch of the debit card here yesterday.

He said Kopenas is also in the process of planning collaborations with several companies and local and international brands in a bid to get discounts for the debit cardholders.

“We have established a partnership with Firefly yesterday and we are now in  discussions with Malaysia Airlines and a few branded stores, which we are hopeful of concluding this year,” he said.

On the partnership with Firefly, the airline is offering Kopenas members special rates through its corporate travel programme, which also allows the members to have flexibility when dealing with Firefly, including booking tickets.

The Debit-i Bank Rakyat-Kopenas card is the first dual-function card – debit card and membership card – in the country for cooperative members.

Through the partnership with Firefly, Kopenas is optimistic that its objective to drive more people to become members will be achieved.

Meanwhile, Bank Rakyat managing director Datuk Mustafha Abd Razak said the bank would offer various facilities for the debit cardholders including transaction service at over 500 businesses and shops registered with the bank.

“In terms of payment management, the card has direct link with the customers’ savings accounts in Bank Rakyat to enable all purchases and money withdrawals through ATMs are automatically deducted from the savings accounts,” he said. — Bernama
