Trial of blogger deferred for plea bargaining

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday adjourned to January 27-30 this year the trial of a blogger for publishing a statement online that was intended to cause fear.

Magistrate Ryan Sangirann Rayner Jr set the dates at the request of counsels Goldam Hamid and Shahlan Jaufri, acting for Yusuf Al Siddique Suratman, 29.

Yusuf was charged under Section 505 of the Penal Code for posting online a statement and image on blogsite Milo Suam with the intention of causing public fear.

The offence is punishable with a maximum of two years’ imprisonment and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Goldam pleaded for a postponement to arrange for plea bargaining with the prosecution. The defence also said that the postponement was for the purpose of submitting a letter of representation to the Attorney General’s Chambers in Putrajaya.

In reply, deputy public prosecutor Nuur Fakhizaa Abu Bakar said that any decision by the prosecution on the matter regarding the plea bargain would be made before January 27, this year.

Earlier, the prosecution informed the court that they were ready to proceed with trial yesterday with three witnesses ready to testify.

The prosecution had intended to call five witnesses for the trial initially set for January 9-10, this year.
