KUCHING: The authorities have been called on to change the traffic flow at Stakan road junction, Kota Sentosa, which has been deemed “problematic”.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Women vice-chief Voon Shiak Ni said this is to prevent more accidents from occurring at the junction in future. She claimed at present the traffic flow made it unclear who had the right of way.

“A disorganised junction like this not only causes accidents but also defeats any claim as to who was at fault when accidents happened.

“PKR has made some observations and found that an estimated average of not less than 200 cars use the junction per hour. The Stakan road serves more than 1,000 residents staying around the area and also serves a health clinic, some workshops and a futsal and badminton court,” she said yesterday.

She called the junction “disastrous”, claiming it allows traffic from all directions to turn in and out. “Traffic coming from after 7th Mile (Kota Sentosa) can turn left, right or straight to Stakan. It is the same for traffic from Stakan and also likewise for traffic from 7th mile old shops and traffic from Samarahan,” she said.

She added that a survey done by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) showed a volume of 3,000 cars per hour during peak hours using the main road at Mile 7, totalling some 20,000 vehicles bypassing the main road at Kota Sentosa per day.

“We appeal to JKR (Public Works Department) to do some alterations to the junction and we leave it to the wisdom of JKR and other relevant authorities to come up with some solutions as soon as possible,” said Voon.
