KUCHING: More grocery shops in the state will be transformed into Coop 1Malaysia in an effort to assist the people with the increasing prices of daily necessities.

Outgoing Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism state director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman said there are 45 such outlets in Sarawak at the moment.

He explained that rebranding as Coop 1Malaysia is important as the people will benefit from the lower prices compared to normal grocery stores.

“The introduction of Coop shops in both Sabah and Sarawak is at the right time in the current situation as prices are around 20 to 30 per cent cheaper with similar quality,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was commenting on the announcement by the Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Hasan Malek that the status of 100 grocery stores in Sabah and Sarawak would be changed.

“Coop 1Malaysia is a product without branding similar to Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) and is under the 1Malaysia 1Price policy,” added Wan Ahmad Uzir.

He pointed out that Coop 1Malaysia also provides the people with more choice in terms of selecting goods for their daily needs.
