SRI AMAN: Government pensioners here are feeling the pinch of the fast rising cost of living especially those who are receiving pittance.

One of them, Pikau Angam, said it was unfair for those who had worked more than 25 years receiving between RM400 and RM500 a month, which was recently increased to RM720 a month.

The increase was just two per cent and not enough to even meet the increasing cost of living, and should be increased further, he said.

Pikau started working for the government on Sept 27, 1968 and retired on Dec 27, 2007.

A pension of RM720 a month is not enough to survive in this day and age,” he said.

His friend, Errol Empaga, also a government retiree, hoped the government would look into the matter seriously
and think of ways to help the retirees.

“We have worked long and faithfully for the government. We deserve a higher pension. Those still working have their remunerations increased from RM80 to RM350, so why is it that we only receive a two per cent increase?”

He served the government from Dec 5, 1963 and retired on Dec 3, 2000.
