355 illegal immigrants rounded up during integrated ops from Jan 21-23

KUCHING: Illegal immigrants totalling 355 were arrested for committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Rules 1963during the Second Phase 6P Integrated Operations conducted by the Immigration Department held from Jan 21 to 23.

According to a press release from the dept, during the integrated operations held in five divisions – Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Limbang and Bintulu – 962 foreigners were checked and 355 were detained.

Out of total arrested, 325 were Indonesians, eight Philipinas, one Pakistani, one Bangladeshi and 20 are still being investigated for their country of origin.

All those detained were held at Immigration holding depo at Semuja, Serian and Bekenu, Miri and temporary police holding lock-ups, pending further investigations.

Among the offences committed was not having passports or travel documents, overstaying, working without valid permits or abusing the pass regulations.

Before the operations, the department conducted intelligence collection and information from the public greatly assisted them.

The department thanked the public for their tip-offs and urged more members of the public to come fo rward with useful information.

Yesterday was the fourth day of the operations, and it will continue until April.
