Kuching strengthens river traffic safety

KUCHING: Coordinating with “Operation Safety 4” that was launched on the 27th,Kuching district Police department head Roslan, during his visitto  the Kuching Waterfront yesterday, urge Sampan operators to strengthen safety on the waters, especially in prompting passengers to put on life jackets.

Roslan distribute stickers with instructions of putting on life jackets to the operators, to stick inside the sampans. He also demonstrated the procedure of putting on one himself.

He mentioned that according to the Sarawak river department, there are 66 water accidents in Sarawak between 2010 and 2013, of which 22 involved the public and the major reason behind most of the cases is the lack of safety practice, especially in ensuring passengers in puttin on life jackets.

He added that any form of transportation requires safety practice, and water transport is no exception, therefore he hope that operators of water transport could emphasize on passengers’ safety and urge related departments to continue informing the public about the importance of these safety precautions, including hosting events like yesterday’s distribution of life jackets.
