KOTA KINABALU: A lion dance performer is seeking treatment at the hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by another group of lion dance performers while performing the traditional dance here on Sunday.

The incident allegedly happened when the 20-year-old victim was attacked and stabbed twice with a sharp object by his assailants at Lorong Angsa 6, Taman Pelangi, Luyang around 11.30pm on February 9

It was said that prior to the incident, the victim’s group which comprised of 39 performers and their group leader, arrived at the location for a lion dance performance in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, but had to wait for another group to complete their performances.

It was learnt that both groups started mocking their opponents which led to an argument.

As the situation started to tense up, the victim’s group leader instructed his group to leave the scene immediately.

After the group left the area, the victim told his group leader that he had been attacked by an unknown individual from the second group.

The victim was immediately taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra yesterday confirmed the incident and said police were still carrying out investigation.

“Initial police investigation shows the victim sustained two minor stab wounds and report received indicates the victim is in stable condition.

“Police also believe the incident was caused by a misunderstanding between both groups of lion dance performers,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.
