SHAH ALAM: The seven-year marriage of popular singer-actress Erra Fazira and her husband Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin, rumoured to be troubled in the last three years, finally ended in divorce at the Syariah High Court, here, yesterday.

Clad in a grey suit and wearing a songkok, Engku Emran, 39, who looked sad, pronounced the divorce in a choking voice before judge Mohammad Adib Husain, while Erra, whose real name is Fazira Wan Chek, 40, appeared calm.

Mohammad Adib confirmed the divorce after he was satisfied with the divorce documents including on child custody rights filed by Erra yesterday under Section 47 and Section 82 of the Selangor Islamic Family Law Enactment 2003.

The court also recorded that the custody rights over the couple’s only child, Engku Aleesya, 5,
were given to Engku Emran while Erra has the right for the child to have overnight stays with her.

The actress, who came to court in a long dress and hijab, also did not claim for any alimony
from Engku Emran whom she married on Oct 25, 2007.

Earlier, syariah counsel Ahmad Nazib Johari, who represented Erra, told the court that the couple agreed to divorce amicably after having been living separately for one and a half years.

He said Erra and Engku Emran had also reached an agreement over child custody.

Engku Emran, the former Bernama TV chief executive officer, was represented by counsel Roshdan Sujak Rafie.

Later, met by reporters outside the court, Erra who was wearing a face mask, said all the speculation and questions about her marriage had been answered with her divorce confirmed by the court today.

Erra, who was accompanied by her close friends, Datin Paduka Umie Aida and film director Erma Fatima, also appealed to all quarters to stop asking about her marital break-up after this.

“I hope everyone will leave me in peace,” she said, adding that she would be focusing on her career, when asked about her future plans.

Engku Emran, however, declined to give any comments when approached by reporters.

He and Erra left the court grounds separately after the divorce proceeding.

Erra’s previous marriage was to actor and KRU group singer Yusry Abdul Halim whom she married on June 15, 2003 but the marriage only lasted three years when they divorced in 2006. — Bernama
