MCA’S Chew Mei Fun is BN candidate for Kajang by-election

KUALA LUMPUR:  The Barisan Nasional (BN) today named MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun as its candidate for the Kajang state by-election on March 23.

BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the announcement at a news conference at Menara Dato Onn, here.

Muhyiddin, who is the deputy prime minister, said Chew, who hailed from Selangor, was selected as she was competent, had extensive experience and was familiar with the workings of the federal government.

“Our strategy is surely to achieve victory. Although we know that we will be up against a strong challenge from the Pakatan Rakyat or others, we look at it as an opportunity for the BN to offer a candidate.

“This BN candidate is credible, has experience, has worked for the government and is an MCA vice-president,” he said.

The Kajang by-election has been necessitated by the sudden resignation of the assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), on Jan 27.

PKR had initiated the move to enable its de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to contest the by-election and reportedly take over as the menteri besar of Selangor.

Muhyiddin said the BN would draw up its election campaign strategy, and give special focus to the machinery of the component parties there.

“The component parties, including their women’s, youth and Puteri wings, have been instructed to make the necessary preparations and work in each of the polling districts. We have identified the polling districts where we have won or lost.

The deputy prime minister explained that BN decided to contest the by-election because it offered an opportunity for the coalition to offer its service to the voters to make a wise choice. – Bernama
