KAPIT: Tuai Rumah Nuang Unging – whose longhouse lost 13 bilik due to a fire on Wednesday – has thanked the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for its quick response.

He pointed out that Bomba personnel were at the scene minutes after receiving a distress call.

“Indeed, we’re fortunate that Bomba’s swift action was able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby detached houses.

“Or else we would have suffered a lot more losses because there are a total of 36 bilik here,” he said during the visit of Wilson Nyabong Ijang – a political secretary to the Chief Minister – on Friday.

Nuang said the Welfare Department was also quick to arrange for food and monetary assistance, along with aid for students.

“The Red Crescent, Lions Club and Methodist Hock Ing Kapit District Social Concern Committee donated food, clothing, money, etc. Yesterday (Thursday), a political secretary

to the Chief Minister Jefferson Jamit handed over RM1,000 and a coffee shop operator Lau Swee Guan donated RM1,100,” he added.

Nyabong also handed over a personal donation of RM500.

Some 40 residents were made homeless by the fire.
