KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak has welcomed the education allocation announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the Balingian state constituency.

Muhyiddin announced on Thursday that RM79 million has been allocated to build SMK Balingian in the sub-district and rebuild SK Kampung Tellian in Mukah.

PKR Sarawak chairman Baru Bian said the announcement to build new schools should not be limited to Balingian during this by-election period, but also extended to other areas in Sarawak which are in need of better schools.

“We welcome their announcement. This is a revelation of how Balingian had been abandoned in terms of development,” he told reporters yesterday.

Baru claimed the announcement of projects could be a sign of a desperate move by Barisan Nasional (BN) to win votes.

Meanwhile, PKR national Women’s vice-chief Voon Shiak Ni claimed many of BN’s election promises have not been delivered, including a health clinic for Siburan promised during the 2011 state election.

“My message to Balingian voters is that they should not throw their votes to Barisan Nasional. They should learn from the lessons of broken promises made in 2011,” she said.

Polling for the by-election will be on March 29.
