KUCHING: The position of Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem in his party – PBB – and state BN is precarious since he is relying on the support of Umno to fortify his position and authority.
Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, who is also state PKR vice-chairman, said that only a month helming the state Adenan’s pledge to defend the state’s autonomous prerogative rights rings empty.
“In his oath of office, he vowed to keep out racists and religious bigots from Peninsular Malaysia from entering the state, winning initially praises from the public. It was then revealed that the president of Umno-finance Perkasa was in Sarawak.
“He denied it, saying the Immigration Department had no record of Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s entry to Sarawak,” See told a press conference here yesterday.
See said Sarawak Report had published photographs of Ibrahim in Kuching and a hotel bill signed by the leader of the ‘Umno wing of ultra-Malay’, which clearly showed that he was in Kuching on March 20 and 21.
“He (Adenan) was already the chief minister on March 20 and 21. Did the Immigration Dept delete Ibrahim’s entry record without his knowledge or was he (chief minister) intentionally withholding the information from Sarawakians?”
See said that by denying the entry of election MPs such as Zuraida Kamaruddin, Tian Chua, Rafizi Ramli and PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution into Sarawak, Adenan had also shown that he was wary of his weak political position as the state BN chief and chief minister.
“I certainly can’t recall of any instance when the former chief minister (Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) had, in his 33-year reign, ever denied entry of opposition MPs from entering Sarawak to help in the election campaign.
“By exercising his prerogative in defiance of our constitution, the specific provisions in our Immigration Act and the rules of natural justice, his insecurity in the high office is clear and obvious.”
See said in his precarious position, Adenan would be dependent on the support of the Umno-dominated federal government.
“Hence the promise that he will keep out racists and religious bigots from Sarawak will be breached when it comes to those related to Umno.
“Apart from Ibrahim Ali, others allowed into Sarawak during the election campaign was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim who is another Malay rights supremacist, a permanent fixture in the BN campaign team.
“It is therefore clear that the exercise of the state autonomous prerogative in Immigration will be dictated by Umno,” he said.
