SIBU: Works to upgrade the 6km flood-prone stretch of Bekakap/Sg Melanggan Road in Bawang Assan was completed recently at a cost of RM1.2 million.

Residents of Sg Apong and Sg Melanggan are particularly happy with the project which began in November last year.

Longhouse chief Melina Gerasi said the project would hopefully make flooding in the area a thing of the past.

Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh commissioned the upgraded road on March 30.

Melina, who was also at the commission ceremony held on Sg Bekakap Bridge, said the road was riddled with potholes before the project.

“With the upgraded road, our travel will be less time consuming,” he enthused.

Her sentiments were echoed by another longhouse chief, Siah Geramong.

Siah said sending children to school was a tedious task when the road was in deplorable condition.

“No longer so with the improvement to the road,” he said.

Longhouse chief Unjah Besh, on the other hand, saw the project as a gesture from the government to reciprocate the support it got from the people.
