KOTA KINABALU: A local man cheated death when his Perodua Myvi car plunged into a five-metre wide monsoon drain from the parking bay of shophouses near the Sabah Museum here yesterday evening.

The man, in his 30s, reportedly had just got into his vehicle and started the engine when it suddenly reversed and plunged into the monsoon drain around 3.30pm.

He managed to get out of the car and swam to safety in the drain before members of the public came to his aid. He reportedly suffered only minor injuries.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun confirmed the incident and said that the car owner had been taken to the nearby hospital for outpatient treatment.

“The car owner sustained minor injuries only and is reported to be in stable condition. No casualty was reported and the case is still under investigation,” he said.
