KUCHING: The Simplesmente Capoeira is set to return to Kuching for the second time, which will see capoeiristas (practitioners of Capoeira) from different countries unite and gather to celebrate the joy of capoeira.

To be held at Stampark Place badminton hall from April 23 to 24, the event will feature Professor Rafael from Malaysia and Contra Mestre Claudinho from Grupo Bantus Capoeira Singapore who will meet students of MSC Sarawak interested in Capoeira.

According to MSC Sarawak founder Malcolm Wu Han, the workshop aims to expose current students to new techniques and gain knowledge from the invited guests.

“It is an exchange programme for participants from Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and the state itself,” said Malcom who is commonly known as Instructor Bocao.

He was speaking at a press conference to announce the event at Stampark Place yesterday.

Later, he disclosed that a public performance of capoeira (Roda de Rua) would be held at The Summer Shopping Mall on April 25 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

“The main highlight will be on Saturday 26 April from 11am onwards, where the event will also see open capoeira workshops for the public where participants can learn simple moves and even win prizes,” said Malcolm.

“We will then have our upgrading ceremony (Batizado e Troca de Corda) for 10 MSC Sarawak students who will be the first Sarawakian future capoeiristas,” he added.

Malcolm further said the event will continue with a ‘Samba de Roda Workshop’ at 3.30pm and end with a music and dance performance from 9pm onwards at 5 Foot Way Bistro & Cafe.

“This year promises to be more vibrant and exciting than the first one held in June 2013. We basically celebrate our students’ upgrading while aiming to spread awareness on capoeira and the Brazilian arts and culture in general,” he said.

Organised by MSC with support from the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil-Malaysia, the event is also supported by Ouryouth.my, Planet Borneo Lodge, Samba-Ipanema Footwear, Stampark Place and 5 Foot Way Bistro & Cafe.

Among those present yesterday were Ouryouth.my founder Dato Patrick Liew, Samba Ipanema footwear representative Olivia Ling, The Summer Shopping Mall representative Jen Wong and Planet Borneo Lodge representative Gracie Geiki.
