SHAH ALAM: A total of 630 headmasters and 566 primary schools nationwide yesterday received the Headmasters New Deal (TBGB) Award 2013 amounting to RM23.2 million for their outstanding performance last year.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said they comprised 209 urban schools, 302 rural schools and 55 remote schools.

He said the achievement for 2013 shows an increase compared to 2012 in which a total of 180 urban schools and 280 rural schools were given the award.

“National Type Chinese Schools rose from 54 in 2012 to 74 schools while National Type Tamil Schools rose from 45 schools in 2012 to 54 schools. Of these recipients, 119 schools have received this award four times in a row.

“I would like to draw attention to the success of the only Orang Asli national school, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Tasik Chini, Pekan, Pahang that was nominated and won the award,” said Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister at a ceremony to present the TBGB Award 2013, here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said all the schools had been verified by the Inspectorate and Quality Assurance from Jan 22 to Feb 21 after passing screening and obtaining audit certificates without question and had no disciplinary cases.

“The Sub NKRA (National Key Result Areas) achievement of the Headmasters New Deal for 2013 is 7.31 percent of 7,746 primary schools, exceeding the six per cent target.

“The Headmasters New Deals Award is one of the main indicators for the formation of a holistic human capital to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Effective management of schools depends on the ability of headmasters to address challenges and ensure that resources have ‘shared outcome’ in line with the desire and aspiration of the people and the education system. Muhyiddin said the aim of the TBGB award was to recognise effective school leadership to produce the desired ‘outcome.’

“I believe that the headmasters present here have succeeded as proven by the recognition of their outstanding performance via TBGB today.”

On the TBGB award, he said 22,063 school staff comprising headmasters, teachers and members of the implementation group will benefit from it.

Starting this year, the payment will be extended to all federal and state officers serving schools under the Ministry of Education.

Muhyiddin said maximum payment will be made to headmasters who served schools for 12 months while those with less service will be given pro rata.

He advised those yet to receive the TBGB award to make the recipients their inspiration and to strive and plan strategy to strive for excellence. — Bernama
