PORT KLANG: Fire broke out onboard an oil tanker that was transporting diesel, about 3.6km from the North Port, here at about 12.30pm yesterday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Assistant director of Operations, Mohd Sani Harul said the fire was believed to have been caused by a faulty engine at the rear portion of the ship.

“We received a call at 1pm. About 30 percent of the ship was damaged in the fire. Firemen took about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control,” he told Bernama, here today.

Mohd Sani said 26 fire fighters from Port Klang and North Port were deployed to the scene in two boats.

Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said during the incident there were 11 crew members on board plus the captain of the ship.

However, they were all safely transferred with the help of two MMEA vessels. — Bernama
