Social media boon to small business operators

PUTATAN: The social media has helped small business owners in Sabah to conduct their marketing and promotional efforts without burning a hole in their pockets.

Small business owner Ivy Impak, who owns a family-run bridal salon called ‘Vee Bridal House’ near the Servay Hypermarket here said promoting her business through social media such as Facebook and business directories such as Sabahportal.com were helping businesses like hers to thrive.

“I would post photographs of any new bridal gowns that we have recently designed or acquired on Facebook and so far, the response has been encouraging. We get a lot of clients from the internet,” she said.

She began her business, which focuses on Malay engagements and weddings, last year.

“I began with a beauty and hair salon business in Donggongon before shifting my operation here in Putatan. I still have my beauty and hair salon which provides make-up services, hair styling services and so on,” she said.

She also promotes that business online.

Additionally, she also conducts a service that complements both her bridal house and hair and beauty salon – a catering business.

“All members of my family help out in the business but in terms of promotion, we go online for it,” she said.

She added that her mom, Lee Moi Nip, a former educator, has been her strongest supporter in the business.

“She helps with the sewing, the designing … her assistance has been tremendous.”
