LIMBANG: Sarawak Bank Employees Union (SBEU) will continue to protect the welfare of bank staff in the state against any right violation and abuse by their respective employers.

SBEU Northern Region chairman, Mohd Khairul Ariffin Bolhadi said there are still many bank staff in the state who do not know their rights and labour laws.

“SBEU is a strong organization that protects the bank staff as well and gives information on their rights through various courses,” he said during the Welfare and Social Programme at Rehabilitation Centre (PDK) here, yesterday.

Mohd Khairul said amongst the other hot issue in the banking industry in the state is the retrenchment of bank staff by one of the international standard banks centralised in Kuching, Sibu and Miri last year.

“SBEU also acts to assist the workers through holding negotiations with the banks to prevent the them from being terminated from their contract,” he said.

“SBEU also continues to be proactive in hosting various programmes including those relating to social, sport and community events,” he added.

“We choose PDK Limbang branch as our target location to carry out our social and welfare activity hoping to bring joy to the trainees at the centre,” he said.

He said, previously similar activities were held with success in Bintulu and Miri.

During the event, SBEU also donated RM500 to PDK Limbang.

Meanwhile, SBEU planned to hold a badminton competition in Miri this year as part of their annual activities in bringing together the union members.

Currently, SBEU has more than 500 registered members involving the northern region with some 50 members in Limbang and Lawas.

Also present at the event was PDK Limbang supervisor, Norlila Mahmud.
