LABUAN: A big scale oil spill disaster training would be held on the island from May 6 till 8.

Chief executive officer of Labuan Corporation (LC), Mohd Nadzri Osman, yesterday said the training was important to test the level of preparation and capability of the rescue agencies here, including Shell, in managing an oil spill disaster.

“This third-degree disaster management will involve Labuan, Sabah, Sarawak and even Brunei. It is a complex training that needs coordination in terms of resources at the state level,” he said.

The training is being jointly organised by Labuan Disaster Management Committee and Shell Malaysia, where LC would take the lead in the training.

Among other government agencies involved in the training will be the National Security Council, Environment Department, police, Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency and others.

“In Labuan, this training will focus on cleaning an oil spill around UMS area and will not affect the daily activities of the people here on this island, especially along the coastal area of UMS.

“I do hope the people here, particularly those living at Kampung Sungai Miri and Sungai Lada, will stay calm and not panic, as it is only a training,” said Mohd Nadzri.
