KUCHING: Kenyalang Park Community Association president Penghulu Tan Heng Kee urged residents to look after each other’s houses in their effort to ensure the neighbourhood is safe from criminals.

As the crime rate had increased to an alarming state, the association’s main concern was the safety and security of the residents.

He also said if the people only relied on the police force, it might not be able to solve all crimes.

Therefore, he urged the residents to be alert in and out of their houses. They should also be united and work together to protect the neighbourhood from crime.

“I also called upon the new committee members to work out activities that could enhance relationships between members,” he said at the filial piety dinner and installation night here recently.

Meanwhile, he urged children to honour their parents while they still had the chance.

He said as life is unpredictable, children should appreciate their parents who work hard and sacrifice much to raise them.

Tan, who is also the organising chairman, said although nowadays married children would move out and less people would stay with their parents, they still can visit each other.

Whether due to work or marriage, he said children should make time and care for their parents.

Foochow Association Kuching president Wong Tiong Hook, who was present as the guest-of-honour, said filial piety is one of the most known Chinese traditional values and very much emphasised amongst the Chinese community since the olden days.

“But the sad thing is not all are practising it. Some people are doing it everyday but some would make many excuses like busy working and therefore they had no time for their parents,” he said.

He said it is not hard to honour parents. They can start with a thankful heart and do what they can do for parents; that would be enough.

He said what parents want is children’s company and concern. They could do it as simple as taking their parents for a walk, have a chat and their happiness is priceless.
