KUCHING: A contract worker was killed in a road accident along Mile 23 Kuching-Serian Road while on his way home from visiting a funfair in Siburan on Tuesday night.

The deceased, identified as 26-year-old Sahrul Othman, was riding pillion on a friend’s motorcycle when the incident happened around 11.30pm.

Sahrul and his three friends were at a funfair in Siburan bazaar when they decided to head back to their quarters at Mile 29 Kuching-Serian Road on two motorcycles.

According to two of his friends, they had arrived at Mile 23 when they realised that Sahrul and their other friend were no longer travelling behind them.

After waiting for about 15 minutes, they decided to double back and soon came across the deceased lying motionless on the road, with their other friend nowhere in sight.

Traffic police personnel from Padawan district headquarters were immediately despatched to the scene after being informed of the incident, with medical personnel arriving later to certify the death.

A source indicated that the motorcycle Sahrul and his friend were on was thought to have crashed along the road divider, although it was unclear why the friend fled.

More than an hour later, the friend suddenly returned to the scene — with light scrapes on his face and limbs — and was immediately whisked away by police for questioning as his two friends berated him for fleeing after the accident.

Sahrul’s sister, meanwhile, showed up after being notified of the incident and broke down at the sight of his body before accompanying it to the Sarawak General Hospital mortuary.
