Pesta Sebuyau 2014 to be held from May 23 to 25

KUCHING: Sebuyau will be buzzing with actitivies in conjunction with ‘Pesta Sebuyau 2014’ scheduled from May 23 until 25.

Advisor of the festival, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, said the line of activities will start this Sunday to include ‘sukan rakyat’ and a jogathon, among others.

Other activities until May 25 will also include religious activities, business seminar
for entrepreneurs around Sebuyau and Samarahan, and ‘pertandingan tanda lama’, which is open to the public and ‘pentas rama’ in collaboration with Information Department.

“This year, we are going to have the celebration (PestaSebuyau) on a bigger scale to promote the
area (Sebuyau) and the local culture and the people and the products while at the same time promoting unity among the various races,” Julaihi told a press conference, after chairing the committee meeting at State Legislative Assembly (DUN meeting room.

He added that the festival will also help to promote small businesses in the area, where 134 stalls selling various products and exhibition will be set up.

(Investment and Promotion) also disclosed that the highlight of the festival will be a regatta to be held from May 23 until 25.

He said registration for the event is still open and will close at noon on May 20. The champion (Raja Laut) will receive RM3, 000 cash prize, he added.

“We want to revive the event (regatta) in Sebuyau…we already have Sarawak Regatta and now we want to promote Sebuyau Regatta water sports in the area,” he pointed out.

He stressed that the regatta, which was last held about a decade ago, is also part of the Visit Sarawak Year 2014.

Adding to the celebration will be the earth-breaking ceremony for new Sebuyau mosque to be performed by Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem on May 24, who will also officiate at the Regatta on the same day.

Julaihi expected about 20, 000 visitors to the festival, since Sebuyau is now accessible by roads and ferry services and Batang Sadong and Triso.

Hours of the ferry are scheduled for the convenience of the people to the festival.
