Duo rescued from swelling river

PENAMPANG: A man and a woman were stranded on a clustre of rocks at a recreation centre after the water level in the Kibunut River here suddenly rose yesterday.

The two friends, in their 20s and 40s, are said to have gone to the area for a picnic when the water rose dangerously due to heavy rain around 1pm.

Penampang Fire and Rescue station chief Jamaludin Hussin said the station received a distress call from the public at 3.32pm and immediately deployed a team of fire and rescue personnel to the scene.

“We had to use ropes to reach both victims and managed to get them back to safety about half an hour later,” he said.

Jamaludin added no untoward incident happened and both victims were taken to the nearest hospital for outpatient treatment.
