The RM6-million upgrading works for An-Nur Mosque in Sibu.

SIBU: The facelift of An-Nur Mosque here costing some RM6 million, is expected to be completed within two years.

The mosque rebuilding committee chairman Dr Annuar Rapaee said that phase one of the project costing RM3.5 million is expected to be completed within six months.

“Upgrading works started some three weeks ago and I am pleased with the progress thus far.

“When the entire project is completed, it will give a new look to the mosque,” Dr Annuar, who is Nangka assemblyman, said after officiating at the town’s first senior citizens activity centre here recently.

He pointed out the mosque could accommodate some 5,000 people at any one time.

He said the upgrading works among others focused on creating convenience for the elderly and the disabled.

On phase two, he said this would involve the main entrance, seminar room and library.

Asked on the funding, he revealed that they had received allocation from the government and Baitumal Sarawak apart from public donations.

To raise more funds, they would soon roll out the programme ‘Wakaf Tunai’, he said.

“We can’t wait until we have adequate fund to start the project as by then, the costs would have climbed,” he said.
