LAHAD DATU: A transport company owner was injured when he jumped out of his four-wheel-drive vehicle as two men tried to abduct him in Lahad Datu on Wednesday.

The carjacking incident happened at about 11.30am as Chong Nyuk Fah, 60, was said to be putting his belongings into the boot of the vehicle parked behind a hotel.

He suddenly felt someone trying to strangle him from behind before pushing him into the vehicle.

One of the carjackers then grabbed the car key from him before driving off towards Kampung Puyut, a seaside settlement.

However, when they reached a roundabout about 30 metres away, Chong jumped out and sought the help of passing motorists to take him to Lahad Datu Hospital.

Lahad Datu district police chief Supt Samsudin Mat said the police did not believe that the carjackers had intended to kidnap Chong, who is involved in transporting oil palm in the district.

“They only wanted the car but had to take the owner along due to fear that he would raise the alarm,” he said, adding that the police were searching for the vehicle and the suspects.
