Businessman escapes gallows, wants to be with family

KUCHING: A businessman who escaped the gallows said he couldn’t wait to be with his family after his appeal against the death sentence for drug trafficking was allowed by a Court of Appeal yesterday.

Ngu Chee Wui, 40, from Bintulu, who has been remanded since six years ago pending was also freed from two drug possession charges by a panel of judges led by Datuk Zaharah Ibrahim in their unanimous decision.

The father-of-three happily told reporters after the proceeding and after learning of the verdict, said that he could not wait to return home to be with his family.

In delivering the verdict yesterday, the court – whose other panel members comprised Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim and Datuk Varghese Goerge Varughese – found it was safe to sustain the conviction after going through all the records during the trial and appeals as well as submissions made by the defence and prosecution.

Ngu was earlier found guilty of trafficking 78grammes of methamphetamine and received the death sentence from Bintulu High Court on July 19, 2011.

He was also fined RM200 and RM7,000 for possessing 0.25grammes of cannabis and 4.22grammes of Ketamine and Methamphetamine, respectively.

All the offences were allegedly committed at Taman Heng house in Bintulu about 10pm on Jan 18, 2008.
