LIMBANG: The government is setting up a fish landing centre and ice cube factory for fishermen.

“These two projects are still under planning with research on income-generating opportunities in Limbang market,” revealed Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah.

Hasbi said the country would not able to enjoy the benefit of the sea resources without fishermen risking their lives to bring fish for the people.

“Hence, the government takes care of fishermen’s welfare and interest.”

He said this during the handover of RM18,000 worth of fish tank insulation to some 28 fishermen in the district at Limbang Fish Market on Monday.

Others present at the handover ceremony were Limbang District Officer Rino Musino, Limbang District Council Walikota, Councillor Sufian Mohat, Limbang Fisherman Association chairman Sondit Mail and Limbang Fisherman Association general manager Stredella Romina Lynne.

On the shortage of ice cubes to preserve fish, Hasbi called for local entrepreneurs to produce ice cubes in the compound of their homes.

“The market is huge for ice cubes with high demand from fishermen and cold storage industry. Thus it is an opportunity to be grabbed by the local community to gain extra income,” he said.

Hasbi also urged the representative from the association to issue a letter to Limbang Rivers’ Board on the poor condition of the fish landing jetty which is slippery, submerged and not properly maintained.
