KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) hopes to achieve ‘Zero Lost Time Injury’ in its ‘Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) 2014’ following zero injuries recorded last year.

Its Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai wants this reputation to continue for years to come.

“In 2013, we recorded zero injuries at work place and I am very thankful that no untoward incidents happened to our staff. The record has helped us in achieving our OSH DBKU 2014 objective which is ‘zero lost time injury’,” he said when launching the ‘DBKU Safety and Health Day’ here yesterday.

DBKU deputy director (regulatory services) Andrew Joris and executive director of Alliance Safety Management Services Sdn Bhd Netty E Komattu were also present.

Abdul Wahap also said the commission hoped to significantly reduce accidents in the workplace with its ‘OSH Eyes’ 2014 campaign which encouraged staff to report any unsafe practices or conditions.

The OSH Eyes 2014 is a brainchild of DBKU Safety and Health Committee that rewards each certified report with RM2.

The best and most effective report will be given an incentive of RM200 and a plaque early
next year. There are also second and third best reports as well, with incentive of RM150 and RM100 respectively.

He also announced that DBKU had obtained OHSAS 18001:2007 certification and is the first local authority to receive ISO 9011 (QMS), ISO 12001 (EMS) and OHSAS 18001:2007 certifications.

Besides, DBKU is also listed in the Malaysia Book of Records last year and won the ‘Workers Safety and Health Excellence Awards’.

Yesterday’s event was held in conjunction with ‘World Occupational Safety and Health Day’.

This year’s celebration is themed ‘Safety and health in the use of chemical at workplace’.
