MIRI: The restigious Kenyalang Shell Press Awards (KSPA) for journalists to be held here on Oct 18 this year promises to be different from the past 25 editions of the awards’ presentation.

It will focus on capacity building to reflect the true meaning of giving the awards to recognise journalistic excellence and to further enhance the standard of journalism in the state.

Thus, activities proposed to be held as part of the award presentation will include a journalism workshop and review on entries for KPSA, and games.

These were among issues agreed during the first working committee meeting for the 26th edition of KPSA at Shell Lutong yesterday.

Shell Malaysia Exploration & Production Communications advisor Zulkifli Baba Noor chaired the meeting. The working committee members comprised media personnel who were also members of the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA), led by president Adrian Tang.

The meeting also proposed that two days be allocated for the event, one day for the workshop, and the next morning for games like bowling for the journalists and staff from Sarawak Shell.

“The presentation ceremony at night will also be different, with only the winner going on stage to receive the award from the guest-of-honour, while the second and third place winners will received theirs from the counter allocated.

“The performance will also be done by the journalists themselves so as to showcase their talents and make the night truly a meaningful night for them,” said Zulkifli.

Meanwhile, KPSA continued to receive overwhelming response and for the 26th edition almost 300 entries had been received for eight categories of the awards divided into four languages – Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Iban.

The eight categories were Journalism Award (Feature and News Feature), News Reporting Award, Business and Economic Reporting Award, Photography Award, Broadcast Journalism Award, Environmental Journalism Award, Health News Reporting Award and Sports Reporting Awards.

Meanwhile, entries are still open until Aug 5, for the Kenyalang Shell Most Promising Reporter Award.

The award is to encourage quality news reporting amongst the new and young reporters who have proven their passion, dedication, commitment and professionalism in the first three years of their journalism career.

KPSA inaugurated in 1988, was organised jointly by Shell, the state government and the Federation of the Sarawak Journalists Association (FSJA) to honour the contribution of journalists in nation building. It is meant for full-time journalists, photographers and producers from the print and electronic media in the state.
