KUCHING: Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) will from Aug 9 to 10 conduct a counselling course for women aged 21 years old and above to train and recruit volunteers to run their Crisis Phone Line.

The Crisis Phone Line provides a listening ear, empathy and moral support to women in crisis, and helps them resolve their crisis.

The course will cover principles, process and practice in counselling.

The topics include a variety of issues affecting women, family and children.

Qualified trainers will guide participants on developing awareness and sensitivity towards others as well as how to counsel a person in need or in crisis.

Participants are expected to sign up as volunteers for the Crisis Phone Line after the training. Volunteering on the phone line involves a minimum of two hours or one session of manning the phone line for a month.

There will be a minimal course fee of RM20 to attend the counselling course.

Some of the trainers are Dr Ling How Kee, a founding member of the society as well as a trainer and resource person for the phone line since its formation in 1988; Gill Raja, a professionally qualified social worker with years of experience in counselling both in Malaysia and the United Kingdom, Dr Angie Garet and Ann Teo, a practising lawyer with experience in civil matters, including family matters.

The Crisis Phone Line operating five days a week from 7pm to 9pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and 9am to 11am (Wednesday and Thursday) is run by volunteers trained in para-counselling by SWWS.

Women who wish to attend the course can contact SWWS at 082-416053/013-8944285 or email [email protected] by July 14.
